"abstract": "Introduction Motivational interviewing (MI) has been effectively used in health care where a change in health behaviour is needed for example smoking cessation. 1 MI is expected to help patients to shift their focus from the negatives of the treatment to the positives. We want to explore if MI offered during clinic consultation by sleep consultant has helped improving patients’ CPAP Adherence in our sleep medicine unit for patients with OSA with low compliance (target compliance is 70% use, average of 4 hours/night).Methods Retrospective analysis of patients on CPAP before and after MI from 2021-2022. Demographics recorded include age, gender and CPAP compliance (% and average hours used before and after counselling) using Airview System. Statistical analysis was performed to see the change is significant using paired t test. Results 31 patients’ data was reviewed and 26 patients have complete data set. 69% were male and age ranges from 25-81year old with mean age of 54.5.73.1% patients showed improvement in CPAP compliance after MI. 2 patients had maintained or improved to 100% total CPAP compliance following MI. Mean percentage CPAP compliance prior to the intervention was 47.2% +/- 25.4% (1SD) vs 64.0%+/- 26 (1SD) after intervention (p value of 0.0041*). Mean hours of CPAP used improves to 180 minutes from 116 minutes after MI. Limitation of the study is this is small cohort of patients.Discussion Motivational Counselling improves patient adherence on CPAP in this small study. More patients should be included in the next study. Clinician should be given more clinical time to promote motivational counselling. This will improve long term cardiovascular health of patients with OSA.Reference Martins R, McNeil D. Review of motivational interviewing in promoting health behaviours.
