"abstract": "Purpose/Aims The Developmental Vision Clinic (DVC) at Great Ormond Street provides specialist multi-disciplinary neurodevelopmental assessments for children with severe visual impairment where there is a specific developmental concern. School liaison is conducted for many children seen in DVC, with an aim to gather information from teaching staff to build a shared understanding of the child’s development and needs. Assessment of children’s development is a collaborative journey where school liaison and family perspectives are central to understanding the child and providing recommendations (Dale et al., 2022). This project aimed to explore the usefulness of school liaison in informing neurodevelopmental assessment outcomes. It also intended to examine to what extent liaison influenced clinical decision-making, including the need for further appointments and/or for diagnostic considerations. Methods School liaison notes and final clinic reports for five children ( 3 girls, 2 boys; age range 6- 14 years, mean 9.95, SD 2.96) from November 2024 – January 2025 were reviewed. Notes were read identifying themes alongside final reports to determine whether information informed assessment outcomes and recommendations. Results Several themes were identified which inform assessment planning and outcomes. Liaison opened conversations with teachers about social communication and emotional understanding and learning. These insights shaped future appointments, supported considerations of autism or ADHD as potential diagnoses and provided additional perspectives on development. In some cases, liaison notes were not consistently structured to explain outcomes, though still supported collaborative decision making.Discussion/Conclusion School liaison is a valuable part of developmental assessments for children with severe visual impairment, uncovering differences not always evident in clinic/home settings guiding assessment planning. These findings highlight the importance of targeted follow-up and structured feedback from schools. Future research could explore whether liaison increases teacher’s understanding of the child’s individual needs.Reference Dale N, Salt A, Sargent J, Greenaway R. (Eds.). (2022).
