  "abstract": "Background/Objectives Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency associated with significant mortality and morbidity. We investigated the factors predictive of poor functional outcomes in SE.Methods We screened all patients admitted with seizures to Monash Health Emergency Departments in 2021 to identify cases of SE according to the International League Against Epilepsy (2015) criteria. We collected data on sex, age, comorbidities, aetiology, SE classification, medications, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, Age Consciousness Duration (ACD) score, SE final stage, and Modified Ranking Scale (mRS). MRS scores 4–6 were defined as poor functional outcomes and the associated predictors were investigated with logistic regression analysis.Results In terms of SE staging, 38 cases (62.3%) were benzodiazepine responsive, 9 (14.8%) were benzodiazepine resistant, 9 (14.8%) were refractory and 5 (8.2%) were super refractory. The mRS scores at the final hospital assessment were 0 in 7 cases, 1 in 19 cases, 2 in 7 cases, 3 in 5 cases, 4 in 9 cases, 5 in 9 cases, and 6 in 5 cases. Of the 61 cases (41 males, 20 females), the variables associated with a poor functional outcome were age (OR 1.038, 95% CI 1.008–1.070), comorbidities (OR 3.148, 95% CI 1.019–9.723) and ACD score (OR 1.619, 95% CI 1.202–2.180) with univariable analysis. However, the ACD score was the only significant predictor of a poor outcome (OR 1.683, 95% CI 1.125–2.519) in the multivariable analysis.Conclusions The ACD score is a reliable early predictor to identify patients with poor outcomes in SE.",
