  "abstract": "Automation in healthcare is often framed in terms of efficiency. These two Editors’ Choice papers suggest a more important role: improving the consistency, fidelity and clinical usefulness of data. In BMJ Health & Care Informatics, Slattery et al1 and Loo et al2 examine automated monitoring in two very different settings—the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the operating room—yet arrive at a similar conclusion. Continuous, automated measurement may offer a more reliable alternative to intermittent, subjective and labour-intensive assessment.",
