  "abstract": "Rupert was born in Beaconsfield and educated at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe. He read medicine at Jesus College, Cambridge, and completed his clinical training at Westminster. Conscripted into the last year of national service, he served as a medical officer to the Gurkhas in Malaysia and Nepal, where he was involved in the trial of a mumps vaccine. After training as a general surgeon he was appointed as consultant general surgeon at the Horton Hospital in Banbury, where he worked from 1973 to 1996, developing an interest in colorectal surgery and latterly in surgical education.",
