"abstract": "John Bennett was born in Merseyside in 1934. He attended Wallasey Grammar School and subsequently secured a place to study medicine at Liverpool University. His junior posts were at Liverpool, London, and Birmingham. It was while training at the General Hospital in Birmingham that he was inspired by Trevor Cooke to pursue gastroenterology. Two years as Sheldon research fellow in Worcester studying oesophageal pain led to a year at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and firmly established the oesophagus as his lifelong interest.",
