  "abstract": "Gilbert (“Gil”) Thompson was a founding father of lipidology, who established low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as a causal factor in atherosclerotic disease. He did so in the face of fierce opposition in the 1970s and 1980s from many prominent cardiologists, including John McMichael, once described as the greatest scientist of his generation. Tony Mitchell, foundation professor at Nottingham University, said, “Should every cow carry a government health warning?” The consensus had been that the clogging and narrowing of arteries was a normal part of ageing.",
