  "abstract": "Ian was born in Glasgow and attended Shawlands Academy during the second world war. He was dux of the school and won a bursary to study medicine at Glasgow, graduating with a commendation. He returned to the city with his young family in 1954 following service as a medical officer with the Royal Air Force. After junior hospital posts in Glasgow and at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Queen Square, London, he was appointed as a consultant neurologist at the newly formed Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow in 1965. The institute brought together clinicians across several specialties relating to the nervous system. This was a pioneering development at the time and became a model for many organisations that followed.",
