  "abstract": "Ed was encouraged by his village primary school teacher to attend Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School in Rochester, Kent. In 1952 he was awarded a scholarship to study maths at Queens’ College, Cambridge, but he realised he wanted to study medicine and switched to economics and natural sciences before commencing his medical degree the following year. He was a member of the Cambridge University Athletics Club and competed in the triple jump. He represented the university in Australian Rules football and Queens’ College in rugby. In 1955 he moved to Westminster Hospital in London to complete his clinical training.",
