  "abstract": "Richard was born in Newport, Shropshire, and educated at Adams Grammar School, gaining A levels in classics and modern languages. His father was a GP in the same town, and, after deciding to study medicine, Richard studied the sciences before medical training at St Andrew’s University. After junior house jobs he trained for general practice in Brough before his first substantive post as a GP in Cockermouth. He recalls being on call alone for the first time on the day England won the football world cup in 1966 and being called out to many heart attacks.",
