  "abstract": "Although the benefits of bariatric surgery for health are well established, outcomes concerning work and employment remain in doubt. A systematic review (42 studies from 15 countries) finds that, in the short term, employment rates rise and that absenteeism and sick leave fall ( JAMA Surg doi:10.1001/jamasurg.2025.3611). Disappointingly, these improvements don’t seem to be sustained. Employment rates had dropped to pre-surgery levels within five years.",
