  "abstract": "Julian was born in Horsham and brought up in Crawley, West Sussex. His father (who was blind) was an organist, piano teacher, and choirmaster, and his mother a magistrate. He attended Worthing High School for Boys and won a scholarship to Edinburgh University, starting medical school in 1950. He completed an intercalated honours degree in neuroanatomy and qualified in 1957.",
