  "abstract": "In March 2025, World Athletics (WA) reaffirmed that in athletics at the elite level, the female category is a biological sex category, restricted to female-bodied athletes, that is, those whose sex development follows the female pathway. Therefore, athletes who wish to compete in World Rankings Competitions must demonstrate their eligibility to compete in the female category using a SRY gene screening test. This is consistent with the various iterations of WA eligibility regulations, which have always considered fairness and the protection of the female category as overarching principles.1 Eligibility testing began in mid-year 2025, a condition for competition at the Tokyo World Championships in September 2025. This editorial presents the rationale, science and implementation of the WA Regulations for SRY gene screening.",
