  "abstract": "Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) has been defined as a chronic and diffuse abnormality of the meibomian glands (MG) that can encompass alterations in both the quality and/or quantity of meibum.1 This definition leads some to the conclusion that there is a single, unifying MGD phenotype; one that often contributes to a singular ocular surface problem, evaporative dry eye, which is often subsumed into the diagnosis of dry eye disease (DED). In recent years, clinicians have challenged this paradigm for DED, appropriately attempting to subtype DED into relevant categories. Yet this level of specificity has not been applied to MGD—and it’s time that changed.",
