  "abstract": "When the Welsh Government reduced the lowering of the speed limit in built-up areas from 30 miles an hour to 20 miles an hour, there was uproar! It is now clear that traffic-related pedestrian morbidity and mortality have substantially reduced, especially in children, following this change. Lucina believes it was a great idea. It’s not just about the speed limit; it’s also about street design. McDonald M et al (BMJ Paediatrics Open 2025; 2025;9:e002346. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjpo-2023-002346) have examined the impact that traffic has on paediatric safety and well-being. How can streets be designed differently to protect the potential for children to spend more time outdoors and enhance their independent socialisation? The article highlights that as there has been a huge increase in car use and traffic volumes with associated dangers of injury and air pollution, families are less likely to allow their children to walk to school and play outdoors. There’s a paragraph on the impact that car access has on child well-being. The next section discusses potential solutions, referring to the Global Street Design Guide (https://globaldesigningcities.org/publication/global-street-design-guide/). Some suggestions are rebalancing our streets to make it easier for people to leave the car at home, widening pavements and ensuring they are accessible, providing safe cycle routes, improving pedestrian crossings and then lowering vehicle speeds.
